Hier in diesem kleinen idyllischen Städtchen in der Nähe von Los Angeles hat alles begonnen. Die kleine Stadt am Meer war das Mekka für Drogenkonsumenten, Langhaarige und Künstler. Die beiden Studenten Jim Morrison und Ray Manzarek legten im Sommer des Jahres 1965 am Strand von Venice den Grundstein für eine Band, die bald darauf nicht nur in den Vereinigten Staaten für einigen Wirbel sorgen sollten und auch heute noch den Status einer Kultband besitzt: The DOORS.

In einem Haus an einem dieser Kanäle soll - nach Oliver Stone und seinem Film THE DOORS - Pamela Courson gewohnt haben.

Hier wurden auch von Oliver Stone die Scenen gedreht, als Jim über einen Baum und Balkon in das Zimmer von Pamela eindrang und auf die Frage von ihr "Warum benutzt du keine Türen?" antwortete "Reine Zeit verschwendung!" Ob es sich in der Realität und im Jahr 1965 ebenfalls so abgespielt hat, entsprang Oliver Stons Fantasie, denn...

...in Wirklichkeit lernte Jim Morrison seine Pam jedoch bei einem Concert der DOORS im April 1966 im "London Fog", am Sunset Strip von Los Angeles kennen, als sie mit ihrer Freundin den Club besuchte. Pam kam aus Orange Country.
Orange County erstreckt sich über ein Gebiet von 206 qkm und verfügt über 68 km Küste. Die bekanntesten Urlaubsorte sind Anaheim, Buena Park, Huntington Beach, Laguna Beach, Costa Mesa, Balboa und Irvine.

So oder ähnlich muß es ausgesehen haben, als Jim allein, mit den restlichen Mitgliedern der Band, mit Freunden oder mit Pam Abends am Strand von Venice saß und auf das Meer hinaus blickte.

Zwischen 1961 und 1964 wollte Jim Morrison zum Film und studierte deshalb Film- und Theaterwissenschaft. Von 1962 bis 1963 war an der Florida State University in Tallahassee eingeschrieben.
1964 wechselte er an die UCLA in Los Angeles. In dieser Zeit drehte Morrison zwei Filme, der erste hatte den Titel „First Love“.

Morrison schloß sein Studium nicht ab, sondern wendete sich lieber der Musik zu, mit der er seine ganzen Gefühle und Gedanken ausdrücken konnte. Er war ein absoluter Rebell, so lautet ein Zitat von ihm über sich selbst:

„Ich mag die Ideen, die von der Zerstörung der herrschenden Gesetze berichten. Ich bin an allem interessiert, was sich um Aufruhr, Unruhe, Chaos und spezielle, scheinbar unsinnige Aktivitäten dreht. Für mich scheint das ein Weg zur Freiheit zu sein; eine äußere Revolte ist ein Weg zu innerem Frieden.“

Die University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) wurde 1919 gegründet und ist der zweitälteste Campus der University of California. Die Universität befindet sich seit 1927 in Westwood Village in Los Angeles, Kalifornien, zuvor befand sie sich an der Vermont Avenue.

STUDIOS

at 52 W. 8th Street. This recording studio was built and owned by Jimi Hendrix. Jimi only got to record in Studio A as he died less than a month after the opening in 1970. Jim Morrison wanted to record his first solo album either here or at the Record Plant, another well-known recording studio at the time. Jim also wanted to use Eddie Kramer, Jimi's engineer. There's also the rumor that Jim Morrison was present at the recording session of Jimi Hendrix' "The Cry Of Love" and did background vocals for the song "Angel". It became a heritage.

WHISKY A GoGo

Das Whisky a Go Go ist ein legendärer Rockclub auf dem Sunset Strip in West Hollywood, Los Angeles County.

Am 11. Januar 1964 wird mit dem Whisky a Go Go der erste Rockclub im Großraum der Stadt Los Angeles eröffnet. Begründer ist Elmer Valentine, ein ehemaliger Polizist aus Chicago. Der auf dem 8901 Sunset Boulevard angesiedelte Club wird in den 1960er Jahren zu einem der wichtigsten Treffpunkte von Musikern und Musikmanagern.

Anfangs befand sich in diesem Gebäude eine Bank. Erster Musiker, der im Whisky a Go Go auftrat, war Johnny Rivers, der zuvor seine Karriere zufällig in Gazzarris Club begann. Im Laufe der Jahre wurden dort viele bedeutende Live-LPs aufgenommen.

Übrigens stammt auch aus diesem Club der Begriff „Go-Go Dancer“, da hier der Clubeigentümer Damen dafür bezahlte, dass sie an Stangen auf dem Podest tanzten.

The Whisky a Go Go[1] is a nightclub in West Hollywood, California, at 8901 Sunset Boulevard on the Sunset Strip. It has been called the first real American discothèque. In Paris, a slightly differently named Whisky à Go-Go opened in 1947.

It was opened January 11, 1964, at the site of an old bank building that had been remodeled into a short-lived club called the Party, by a former Chicago policeman, Elmer Valentine. Valentine's partners were lawyer Theodore F. Flier, former press agent Shelly Davis, and Phil Tanzini.

Though the club was billed as a discothèque, meaning only recordings with no bands, the Whisky a Go Go opened with a live band led by Johnny Rivers and a short-skirted female DJ spinning records between sets from a suspended cage at the right of the stage. When the DJ danced during Rivers' set, the audience thought it was part of the act and the concept of Go-Go dancers in cages was born. Rivers rode the Whisky-born "go-go" craze to national fame with records recorded partly "live at the Whisky." The Miracles recorded the song "Going to a Go-Go" in 1966 (which was covered in 1982 by The Rolling Stones), and Whisky a Go Go franchises sprang up all over the country.

In 1966, the Whisky was one of the centers of the Sunset Strip police riots. The club was harassed repeatedly by the City of Los Angeles, which once ordered that the name be changed, claiming "whisky" was a bad influence. It was the "Whisk?" for a while.

Arguably, the rock and roll scene in Los Angeles was born when the Whisky started operation. From rock to punk to heavy metal, the club stood at the forefront of many musical trends.

The Whisky played an important role in many musical careers, especially for bands based in Southern California. The Byrds, Alice Cooper, Buffalo Springfield and Love were regulars, and The Doors were the house band for a while -- until the debut of the "Oedipal Section" of The End got them fired. Van Morrison's band Them had a two-week residency in June, 1966, with The Doors as the opening act. On the last night they all jammed together on Gloria . Frank Zappa's Mothers of Invention got their record contract based on a performance at the Whisky. Jimi Hendrix came by to jam when Sam & Dave headlined. Otis Redding recorded his album In Person at the Whiskey a Go Go there in 1966. The Turtles performed there when their newest (and biggest-selling) single "Happy Together" was becoming a hit, only to lose their new bassist, Chip Douglas (who had arranged the song), to the Monkees; guitarist Michael Nesmith invited him to become their producer. (He returned to the Turtles a year later, to produce them.).Neil Diamond also played at the Whisky on occasion.

Dustin Hoffman's character 'Benjamin' can be seen running out of The Whisky in the 1967 film The Graduate.

Many British performers made their first headlining performances in the area at the Whisky, including The Kinks, The Who, Cream, Led Zeppelin, Roxy Music and Oasis. The Whisky was a focus of the emerging New Wave and punk rock movements in the late 1970s, and frequently presented local acts as diverse as The Germs (which recorded its first album there), The Runaways, X, Mötley Crüe and Van Halen while playing host to early performances by the Ramones,The Dictators, The Misfits, Blondie, Talking Heads, Elvis Costello, XTC and The Jam.

The Whisky fell on hard times once the first flush of punk rock lost steam, and closed its doors in 1982. It reopened in 1986 as a "four-wall", a venue that could be rented by promoters and bands. Although a few booths remain on the perimeter, the interior has mostly been transformed into a bare, seatless space where the audience is forced to stand throughout the performances. A few sets of tables and chairs remain in the upstairs area, but these are often roped off as a "VIP" section, reserved for special guests of the bands, record executives, etc. Against this new economic backdrop, a number of hard rock and metal bands, including Guns N' Roses and Metallica, rose to prominence in the 1980s.

During the early 1990s, the Whisky hosted a number of Seattle-based musicians who would later be dubbed "the godfathers of grunge", including Soundgarden, Nirvana, Mudhoney, The Melvins, and 7 Year Bitch.

After re-uniting in early 2007, The Police held a live webcast of a rehearsal at the Whisky on February 12, 2007 that was broadcast on http://www.thepolicerehearsals.com from 2pm to 3pm EST.

40 Jahre nach der Gründung der legendären US-Rockband "The Doors" ist die Gruppe nun mit einem Stern auf dem Hollywood Walk of Fame verewigt worden. Nach Angaben der Veranstalter erhielten die Musiker den 2.329. Stern auf dem berühmten Bürgersteig im Herzen von Hollywood. Gitarrist Robby Krieger (61) und Keyboarder Ray Manzarek (68) nahmen an der Einweihung teil. Drummer John Densmore ließ sich durch anderweitige Termine entschuldigen.

Die ehemaligen Bandmitglieder sind seit langem zerstritten. Densmore war mit einer Klage gegen Manzarek und Krieger vorgegangen, um ihnen die Benutzung des alten Bandnamens zu verbieten. Im Juli 2005 kam ein Richter Densmores Forderung nach. Manzarek und Krieger waren seit 2002 unter dem Bandnamen mit dem Zusatz "Doors of the 21st Century" aufgetreten. Die ehemals vierköpfige 60er-Jahre-Band, die durch Hits wie "Riders on the Storm" und "Light My Fire" bekannt wurde, hatte sich nach dem Tod von Sänger Jim Morrison 1971 aufgelöst.

Doors get star on Hollywood Walk of Fame
‘Jim always used to say: The West is the best’ says Robbie Krieger

LOS ANGELES - Forty years ago, the Doors’ Jim Morrison seduced Hollywood with his wild moves and wilder poetry. On Wednesday, the rock band cemented its legendary status with a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

The Doors’ keyboardist Ray Manzarek, 68, and guitarist Robby Krieger, 61, showed up minus drummer John Densmore for the dedication of the walk’s 2,325th star.

“Jim always used to say: The West is the best!” Krieger said. “It has been an incredible 40 years, and now I’m back with Ray and we’re still playing, and you know, it may never end.”

The band, whose dark sound helped to define the ‘60s, is known for such hits as “Light My Fire” and “L.A. Woman.”

“It is a great honor to receive a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame ... a street that Jim Morrison, Robby Krieger and I traipsed up and down, going into bars, asking if they’d hire a rock band,” Densmore said in a statement read by Morrison’s nephew, Dylan Graham.

Densmore, 62, said he was unable to make the ceremony because of an interview commitment to a local radio station.

The hard-living Morrison died at age 27 in 1971 and the Doors dissolved a few years later.

The surviving members have sparred legally over the of the group’s name.

In 2005, a judge issued a permanent injunction barring Krieger and Manzarek from calling themselves the Doors and using any likeness of Morrison to promote a renewed version of the band.
