Morrison erwähnte da zu später "That's the easiest money I ever made".

The Doors at the Whisky in 1966
50 moments that changed the history of rock & roll

In the summer of 1966, protests against the escalating Vietnam War turned into riots on Los Angeles' Sunset Boulevard. And an unknown rock band called the Doors landed a residency at the Whisky a Go-Go, a club on the Sunset Strip. The group had been formed a year earlier by a couple of UCLA film students: an aspiring poet named Jim Morrison and Ray Manzarek, a blues keyboardist who had studied classical piano as a kid.

"We were the house band at the London Fog, a pathetic little nightclub just down the street from the Whisky," Manzarek says today. "The Whisky was mecca for us. That's where all the big bands played. On our breaks, we'd walk down there and look in the doors and say, 'We're the band from down the street,' and they'd just sort of laugh at us."

When Ronnie Harran, the booker from the Whisky, finally caught the Doors' act, she was impressed by Morrison's primal stage-appeal and offered the group the house-band slot: The Doors would open for the headliners, playing two sets every night. Their very first night at the Whisky, the Doors opened for Them, culminating in both Morrisons (Van and Jim) jamming onstage to "Gloria."

At the time, the Doors had only about fifteen songs. They would throw in some James Brown and Chicago blues covers, but playing two sets a night forced the group to quite literally expand its repertoire, thus shaping the band's sound. "Repeat and stretch," says Manzarek. " 'Light My Fire' took off into solos. 'The End' became the epic we know now."

Soon the house band developed a following of its own, and the Whisky became a destination for local counterculture types. Says Manzarek, "There were these guys named Carl and Vito who had a dance troupe of gypsy freaks. They were let in for free, because they were these quintessential hippies, which was great for tourists. God knows if they were even on anything, they were so out of their minds, but they danced like crazy. And they loved 'The End.' "

An early version of "The End" -- that is, one that could safely be performed at, say, the Super Bowl halftime show. Then, one night in August, Morrison didn't show up for the Doors' first set. The band played without him, with Manzarek and the others handling the vocals, but Whisky co-owner Phil Tanzini was furious and demanded Morrison be retrieved in time for the second set. The group found Morrison at his apartment, wearing only his underwear and tripping on acid, and managed to spirit him back to the Whisky by set time. "Jim was a little spacey, but together," Manzarek recalls. "But then, after the third number, he turns to me and says, 'Let's play "The End." ' I was like, 'Jim, it's only the third number.' " The band, not surprisingly, tended to save "The End" for the finale. Still, the group took Morrison's cue and began playing the song. "There's a point where Morrison has a section where he can do a little improvisation, and he put his hand out to soften us down," Manzarek says. "And for the first time, he says, 'The killer awoke before dawn. He put his boots on.' And one by one, the dancers all stopped and stared. When he said, 'Father, I wanna kill you,' we'd never heard this before, but I thought, 'I know what's coming next. Please don't do it.' "

Morrison, of course, did it. When he howled, "Mother, I want to fuck you!" the band, which had been softly accompanying his recitation, kicked into overdrive. As Manzarek recounts, "John [Densmore] whacked on his drums, I pounded on my organ, Robby [Krieger] made his guitar scream like a banshee, and all hell broke loose. The people began dancing madly. Everyone went into a Dionysian frenzy. It was Greek! Oedipus Rex had been exorcised right there on the Sunset Strip."

The Doors left the stage thinking they'd killed, and they had. They had also offended Tanzini's sense of propriety. He went backstage, asked Morrison, "How the fuck can you say that about your mother?" and fired the band on the spot. Krieger asked, "Do you want us to play through the weekend, or are we fired tonight?" Tanzini thought for a moment, then said, "Oh, right. You play through Sunday, then you're fired."

In the end, things worked out for the Doors. Two days earlier, the band had signed to Elektra Records: The L.A. rock scene would have new standard-bearers to lead the dancing gypsy freaks into the Summer of Love.

Whisky A Go-Go

The Whisky A Go-Go is a nightclub in West Hollywood, California, at 8901 Sunset Boulevard on the Sunset Strip. It has been called the first real American disco.

It was opened January 11, 1963 at the site of an old bank building that had been remodeled into a short-lived club called the Party, by a former Chicago policeman, Elmer Valentine. Valentine's partners were lawyer Theodore F. Flier, former press agent Shelly Davis, and Phil Tanzini.

Though the club was billed as a discothÚque, meaning only recordings with no bands, the Whisky A Go-Go opened with a live band led by Johnny Rivers and a short skirted DJ spinning records between sets from a suspended cage at the right of the stage.

When the girl DJ danced during Rivers' set, the audience thought it was part of the act and the concept of Go-Go dancers in cages was born. Rivers rode the Whisky-born "go-go" craze to national fame with records recorded partly "live at the Whisky." The Miracles recorded the song Going to a Go-Go in 1966, which was covered in 1982 by The Rolling Stones, and Whisky A Go-Go franchises sprang up all over the country.

In 1966, the Whisky was one of the centers of the Sunset Strip police riots. The club was harassed repeatedly by the City of Los Angeles, which once ordered that the name be changed, claiming "whisky" was a bad influence. It was the "Whisk?" for a while.

Arguably, the rock and roll scene in Los Angeles was born when the Whisky started operation. From rock to punk to heavy metal, the club stood at the forefront of many musical trends.

The Whisky played an important roll many musical careers, especially for bands based in Southern California. The Byrds were regulars and The Doors were the house band for a while. Frank Zappa's Mothers of Invention got their record contract based on a performance at the Whisky. Jimi Hendrix came by to jam when Sam & Dave headlined. Otis Redding recorded his album Live at the Whisky there in 1967. The Turtles performed there when their newest (and biggest-selling) single "Happy Together" was becoming a hit, only to lose their new bassist, Chip Douglas (who had arranged the song), to the Monkees; guitarist Michael Nesmith invited him to become their producer. (He returned to the Turtles a year later, to produce them.)

Many British performers made their first headlining performances in the area at the Whisky, including The Kinks, The Who, Cream, Led Zeppelin, and Roxy Music. The Whisky was a focus of the emerging New Wave and punk rock movements in the late 1970s, and frequently presented local acts as diverse as The Germs, The Runaways, X and Van Halen while playing host to early performances by the Ramones, Blondie, Talking Heads, Elvis Costello, XTC, The Jam, Japanese doo-wop musical group Rats & Star, including a famous sex offender Masashi Tashiro, among others.

The Whisky fell on hard times once the first flush of punk rock lost steam, and closed its doors in 1982. They reopened in 1986 as a "four-wall", a venue that could be rented by promoters and bands. The Whisky A Go-Go is now primarily used by hard rock bands.

More rock and roll history has taken place in this one building than in most of the cities in the United States combined. Go-go girls, miniskirted dancers in cages, was started here in the early 60's and started a craze and a national chain of "Whisky-A-Go-Go" s.

The Buffalo Springfield became the "house band" at the Whiskey for a seven-week period from May 2 to June 18, 1966. This legendary series of concerts solidified the band’s reputation for intense live performances and attracted interest from a lot of record labels

Pressemitteilung vom Juli 1967
The Doors at Eagles Auditorium Seattle, WA 7.24-25.1967
(Tom Robbins, Helix, Member of the Underground Press Syndicate, July 1967)

"The intensity begins the moment they stalk on stage and it doesn't let up until the purge is over, the catharsis is complete. Even between numbers, there is no relaxation - no chit-chat, no horsing around. Like the great actors of Japan, The Doors project all the nore intensity when they are silent. The Doors are carnivores in a land of musical vegetarians".

Ticket for The Doors at the KRNT Theater, Des Moines, IA - Sept 27, 1967 - Mint Un-ripped (Wed)
Saved from the basement storage room of the KRNT Theater before it's was torn down in the 1970s. The show occurred in the Fall of '67 before The Doors had "caught on" in Iowa and the show remained mostly unsold. There's probably only 150 of these tickets floating around - be sure to get yours! This particular ticket is the pink ticket for seat in the Balcony. It has small paper chip missing on the backside otherwise perfect

The Doors: KRNT Theater,
Des Moines, IA
-Sept 27, 1967-

The show that no one remembers. Author Greg Shaw was at a loss to find anything about this show except that it did happen...and there were atleast 100-150 unsold tickets for ths show or we wouldn't have these for sale.
Youths in Des Moines were exploring the soon to be torn down walls of the KRNT Theater when they stumbled upon a back entrance to a storage room. Inside they found several thousand unsold tickets in drawers all along the walls - all were for different shows through out the ancient theater's existance. By flashlight they sorted through the sea of tickets in the cold basement. The Doors were the only band that they recognized. As their flashlights grew dimmer, they stuffed their pockets with every Doors ticket they could find. The next morning they returned with new batteries in hand, only to find the wrecking crews had leveled the storage area where they had been the day before.

The mother load of these were sold off several years ago. Every so often one will turn up for sale, but not too much anymore.

When the Shrine Temple Auditorium at the southeast corner of 10th and Pleasant streets was built by Za-Ga-Zig in 1927, it was the largest theater in the Midwest and one of the largest in the world, with a seating capacity of 4,139. Its domed ceiling contained tiny lights designed by an astronomer to duplicate a summer night’s sky. The copper domes on the outside of the building were reminiscent of the eastern influence of the Shrine.

The current site of the New Haven Division (a city block bordered by State, Grove, Wall, and Orange Streets) was at that time the New Haven Arena. Jim Morrison and the Doors performed and Morrison was arrested by the New haven Police and charged with public indecency on stage. The incident was memorialized in the Doors song "Peace Frog" which begins with the words, "There's blood on the streets in the town of New Haven."
